In just one year since the installation of DIGI Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs), SuperValu retailers saved over 182,000 sheets of paper.
We’re delighted to be part of Musgrave Group’s sustainability initiative for SuperValu and Centra stores, with our ESLs helping them move towards a greener future.
So, how can ESLs help you become more sustainable?
How ditching paper shelf labels and going electronic, is going green
The paper price tags, that have been replaced by ESLs, relied on resource-heavy printing. Every ink cartridge ever created still exists! They take up to 1,000 years to decompose. It uses about 4.5 litres of oil to produce an ink cartridge. Each one contributes about 25g to landfill waste and puts about 4.76kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Over 375M ink cartridges end up in landfill each year, with carcinogenic residual ink contaminating soil and water. Over 106 billion printers are sold annually, with many going to landfill after an average 4-5 year lifespan, and while this waste is an important factor, so too is the energy consumed by printers while on standby.
Changing 1,000’s of paper price tags each week creates several kilograms of paper waste. To the contrary, an ESL is highly energy efficient and made to last, warrantied up to seven years and often they last beyond that. The HD e-paper display not only consumes very little of its built-in battery power, but also reduces the need for the bright lighting in store that paper price tags require. ESLs give stores the opportunity to lessen their lighting, energy use and carbon footprint.
ESLs can even help to reduce food waste, boosting retailers’ sustainability
Unlimited, instant price changes help you promote perishable goods that are near expiration to reduce waste. ESLs are just one of many effective ways to reduce food waste, an important item on the sustainability and socio-economic agendas.
Less time on the road
Finally, on this non-exclusive list of reasons ESLs will help you help the environment, is the reduction in travel for retailers with more than one store. DIGI ESLs across multiple departments and locations can be remotely monitored and managed from a central location. Most support issues can be resolved remotely by the DIGI team too. This technology means less travel, which as we all know has much more than one benefit.
